Tom Holland, despite the massive success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, says he is ready to move ahead from the shadow of the web-slinger.
However, Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures, said he hopes the British actor will continue to play Spidey on the big screen.
When asked by Variety about the actor hinting at a succession plan of his in place in Marvel, the executive said, “I love these questions. It’s like when a coach wins the Super Bowl and he goes to the press conference and they say to him, “Are you going to win it next year?”
“The honest truth is we don’t know at this point. This has been the focus of our studio for almost two years.”
However, Rothman added, “I can tell you this: I certainly, certainly hope. I heard Tom say at some point that he wanted to continue, and we would love it if he did.
But the conversation slid into other comic book movies, which, unlike Spider-Man, are not performing supremely well.
Regarding this, Rothman responds in a particular way.
“Superhero movies have to feel fresh,” he said, adding, “The glut of all those movies has made it even more important that they separate themselves in terms of quality.”
“If you’re just taking the obligatory steps, the audience is less excited. You have to work against predictability.” The Sony executive pointed to what he suggested was the issue.
“How do you make movies not feel repetitive? “Brand New Day” is emotionally led, so it feels different,” Rothman answered.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is in cinemas.
