A teenage girl was allegedly raped in Cumilla after travelling there from Dhaka to meet a young man with whom she had developed a romantic relationship through Facebook and TikTok.
The incident took place in a secluded area near Mainamati Government Primary School in Burichang Upazila on Friday night (25 September), Surejit Barua, in-charge of the Debpur Police Outpost, confirmed on Saturday (26 September).
Police and local said the girl began screaming after the alleged rape, prompting the accused to flee. Locals later called the national emergency service 999, and police rescued her from the scene.
Police identified the accused as Rajib Ahmed, 21, of Mirpur village in Mainamati Union. He works at a shop in the Cumilla Cantonment area.
According to police and locals, Rajib met the girl, who works as a domestic help at a house in Dhaka’s Gulshan, through the social media platforms and they subsequently developed a romantic relationship.
After the girl arrived in Cumilla, around 9pm Friday, Rajib took her from the Mainamati cantonment area to a secluded location southeast of Mainamati Government Primary School, where he allegedly raped her later that night.
At one point, the girl began screaming, prompting Rajib to flee.
Surejit said police rescued the girl after 2am on Saturday after receiving information about the incident. “She was sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for medical examination.”
The police official said the girl is an orphan and originally from the Narsingdi.
Police are conducting a drive to arrest Rajib, Surejit said.
