The Jamaat-e-Islami-led political alliance began its long march from Dhaka to Chittagong this morning (5 September), demanding the implementation of the 12 February referendum verdict, justice for the July killings and action on a range of economic and governance issues.
The opening rally started at 7am at Shapla Chattar in the capital, following a recitation from the Quran.
Dr AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad, assistant secretary general of Jamaat and coordinator of the 11-party alliance, delivered the inaugural address. He was followed by other senior leaders of the coalition.
Later, after 8:15am, a huge convoy of vehicles set off for Chittagong, according to media reports, after a speech by Dr Shafiqur Rahman, the opposition leader and chief of Jamaat.
The alliance is also demanding resolution of electricity, fuel, gas and fertiliser shortages; curbs on rising prices of essentials and an end to extortion and corruption; improved law and order; and an end to what it described as narrow partisan control of institutions.
