Hawkers are being rehabilitated in a disciplined manner while ensuring the uninterrupted movement of pedestrians and vehicles, said Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator, Md Abdus Salam today (2 May).
Speaking as the chief guest at the foundation stone laying ceremony for road development work in the Hoque Abashik Residential area under Dhaka South Zone-2, he said, “The current government believes in work.”
State Minister for the Ministry of Railways and the Road Transport and Highways Division Habibur Rashid was present as the special guest.
The road development project, funded by DSCC’s own resources, involves the construction of about 1.1 kilometres of roads, including pipe drains in lanes and by-lanes, at an estimated cost of Tk3.67 crore.
The administrator said, “The honourable prime minister is personally overseeing the overall activities of the city corporation.”
He added that local civic issues and ongoing development projects would be implemented in coordination with the respective Parliament members.
On footpath hawker management, he said, “In the past, hawkers occupied footpaths and roads in an uncontrolled manner, causing public suffering and chaos. From now on, a specific number of hawkers can sit in designated areas of the footpath or road for a fixed time. We are working to rehabilitate hawkers in an organised manner while ensuring uninterrupted movement of pedestrians and vehicles.”
In his statement, State Minister Habibur Rashid Habib said, “I believe DSCC will fulfil the expectations of the people from the new government to the best of its ability.” He thanked the administrator for prioritising newly incorporated areas in development work.
Senior officials of Dhaka South City Corporation and local political leaders were present at the event.
