Police have arrested a man accused of helping the gunman flee after shooting top-listed criminal Yasin Khan Palash, widely known as ‘Kailla Palash’, in the capital’s Rampura.
The arrested individual, identified as Md Imam Hossain, allegedly transported the shooter away from the scene on a motorcycle following the attack, police said.
Confirming the development today (14 June), Hatirjheel Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Asaduzzaman said investigators identified Imam Hossain after analysing CCTV footage of the area. He was arrested during a raid in Badda in the afternoon.
According to police, the gunman fled the scene on Imam’s motorcycle immediately after opening fire on Palash near Rampura TV Centre. The motorcycle used in the escape has also been seized.
The OC said Imam was produced before a court following his arrest, and the court granted a six-day remand for questioning.
Earlier, on Friday (12 June), Palash was shot near his residence adjacent to Rampura TV Centre after Jummah prayers. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, his wife, Mahmuda Khanam, filed a case with the police station against 11 named individuals and seven to eight unidentified suspects.
According to police records, Palash is a convicted offender in the murder case of Jubo Dal leader Mizanur Rahman Mizan, who was killed in Rampura on 29 May 2002.
Although a lower court initially sentenced him to death, the High Court later commuted the sentence to life imprisonment.
He was released from prison on bail about a month before the shooting took place.
