Police have arrested a youth in connection with the alleged gang rape of a Class 10 student after she was taken to a secluded area of Lalmai Hills in Cumilla.
The incident reportedly took place in the Sadher Mura area of Kotbari in Lalmai Hills last night (29 August).
The arrested youth has been identified as Md Sakib, 20, son of Shahid Mia of Ujirpur village in Cumilla Sadar upazila.
Cumilla Superintendent of Police Md Anisuzzaman said police received information about the incident and detained one person.
“The girl has been sent to a hospital for medical examination. A case is being processed in connection with the incident,” he said.
Several teams of district police are working to arrest the four other suspects, the SP said.
Further details will be known after the girl undergoes a medical examination, he added.
According to police and local residents, the teenager, who lives in Chandina upazila, had been in a relationship with a young man named Siam.
On Saturday, the two went to the Dharmasagar Par area of Cumilla. Siam later allegedly took the girl to a secluded spot on the hill, where four of his friends were waiting, according to the sources.
The sources said one of the men stood guard while Siam and the others allegedly raped the girl throughout the night.
The following morning, locals became suspicious when the men were leaving the area with the girl and stopped them. During questioning, the girl told them that she had been gang-raped, according to the locals.
Four of the suspects fled, while locals detained Sakib and later handed him over to police.
