Five members of a family, including a woman, her three children and her brother, were found dead with their throats slit at a house in Kapasia, Gazipur, this morning (9 May), while the woman’s husband remains missing, police said.
The deceased were identified as Sharmin, 30, her daughters Meem, 15, and Maria, 8, her son Farid, 2, and her younger brother Rasul Miah, 22.
Police suspect Sharmin’s husband, Forkan Miah, may have fled after the killings.
The bodies were recovered from a rented house in Rautkona village under Sadar union of Kapasia upazila.
Gazipur Superintendent of Police Md Sharif Uddin confirmed the incident and said police are investigating the motive behind the killings.
According to police and local sources, Forkan, a car driver by profession and originally from Gopalganj Sadar, had been living in the house with his family for around a year.
Locals informed police after discovering the bodies inside the house this morning.
Witnesses said the bodies of the three children were found lying side by side on the floor, while Rasul’s body was on a bed. Sharmin’s body was found near a window with her hands and mouth tied.
Kapasia Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Zubair Hossain said police initially suspect the killings may have stemmed from a family dispute.
He said Forkan has been absconding since the incident, and multiple police teams have launched operations to arrest him.
Police sent the bodies to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, and were also preparing a case over the incident.
The killings have triggered panic among residents in the area.
