The government plans to register returned migrant workers under the second phase of the World Bank-funded Recovery and Advancement of Informal Sector Employment (RAISE): Reintegration of Returning Migrants project, said Project Director Dr ATM Mahbub-ul Karim in Dhaka today (16 September).
“We want to start the second phase of the project. We will submit the proposal to the Economic Relations Division (ERD). If it is approved by the World Bank, we will be able to register returned migrants,” he said at a view-exchange meeting on sustainable reintegration.

Currently, returned migrants are not properly reflected in official migration statistics, as the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) primarily maintains data on workers leaving Bangladesh for overseas employment, according to the project director.
He said the first phase of the RAISE project provided reintegration support to more than 200,000 migrants who returned to Bangladesh during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The proposed second phase would build on the reintegration activities of the first phase, including through a mechanism to register returned migrants and improve data on workers returning to the country.
