Students of Rajshahi University blocked railway tracks and set fire to tyres near the university’s railway station last night (20 September), protesting the alleged beating of a university student by railway staff and Ansar members at Rajshahi Railway Station.
The students began the blockade around 11pm at the Rajshahi University station area. They also reportedly vandalised parts of Rajshahi Railway Station following the incident.
The student who was allegedly beaten was identified as Ayub Ali, a student of the Department of Islamic History and Culture from the 2022-23 academic session. He was receiving treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, according to the university administration.

According to students, Ayub had gone to Rajshahi Railway Station to receive his uncle when an argument broke out between two university students from the Department of English and Ansar members on duty at the station.
At one point, Ayub intervened and spoke in support of the students, following which he was allegedly beaten by the railway staff and others present there.
