Meanwhile, committee member Shairul Kabir Khan said taekwondo is an ancient martial art of South Korea and the country’s national sport. He said it is primarily practised for self-defence and physical exercise using hands and feet.
He noted that taekwondo has been a full Olympic sport since 2000. Explaining the meaning of the term, he said “Tae” means foot, “Kwon” means hand or fist, and “Do” means path or discipline, with the sport aiming to develop physical and mental discipline through the use of hands and feet.
Shairul Kabir Khan also expressed gratitude to State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque and the National Sports Council. He additionally thanked the prime minister for appointing Aminul Haque as state minister for the ministry.
He said self-defence sports such as taekwondo could play a constructive role in Bangladesh’s social context and added that expanding awareness and training programmes at schools and colleges could produce positive results.
