Murder accused Shariful Islam has escaped from a Dhaka court for the second time, prompting authorities to suspend the police constable responsible for escorting him and form a three-member committee to investigate the incident.
Shariful escaped from the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam at around 12:30pm today (6 October) after loosening his handcuffs while being taken back to the court lock-up.
He had been brought to court from jail to testify in a case filed against him over his previous escape in 2025.
DMP Prosecution Division Deputy Commissioner Mohiuddin Mahmud Sohel confirmed the incident.
“Shariful, a remanded accused in a case filed with Kotwali Police Station, cleverly slipped out of his handcuffs and escaped from the court. He had been brought from jail as the case was scheduled for a hearing,” he said.
“Efforts are underway to arrest him. Hopefully, he will be arrested very soon,” the officer added.
According to the deputy commissioner, Shariful took advantage of a moment when the police officer guarding him was distracted and escaped through another door. Police are conducting an operation to recapture him.
The scheduled hearing was in the case filed over Shariful’s previous escape. However, the proceedings could not take place as the witness did not appear in court, according to police and court sources.
After the hearing was deferred, DMP Prosecution Division Constable Md Abdul Alim was taking Shariful back to the lock-up when he allegedly removed his handcuffs and fled through another door.
SI Md Morshed Alam, in-charge of the CMM court lock-up, filed a new case against Shariful with Kotwali Police Station over today’s escape.
Constable Abdul Alim, who was responsible for guarding Shariful, has been suspended. A three-member committee has also been formed to investigate how the accused managed to escape while in police custody and whether there was any negligence of duty.
He escaped from court last year too
This was the second time Shariful escaped from court custody.
On 19 June 2025, he escaped while being taken from the courtroom to the court lock-up after appearing before the Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court in connection with the murder case of 14-year-old Jisan Hossain, filed with Khilgaon Police Station.
Police said Shariful assaulted a constable and managed to remove his handcuffs before fleeing. The incident took place while he was being taken back to the lock-up after the hearing.
A case was filed against him at Kotwali Police Station on the same day, with the then court lock-up in-charge Md Ripon Molla as the complainant.
Shariful was subsequently arrested in connection with the case and remained in custody. He was brought to court today for testimony in that case, only to escape again.
Shariful is the son of late Shafik Ahmed of Haripur village in Nawabganj upazila of Dinajpur.
