Four men have been arrested for allegedly posing as police officers and demanding Tk30,000 from a garage owner in the capital’s Jatrabari, claiming that the garage was storing stolen autorickshaws.
The arrestees are Md Parvez Munshi, 32, Md Imran Hossain, 38, Md Junaid Hossain Kurban, 27, and Md Asif Islam, 33.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Md Akhtar Hossain confirmed the matter.
According to police, the four men went to a garage in the Jatrabari area at around 7:15pm on Tuesday (6 October) and introduced themselves as police officers. They claimed that stolen autorickshaws were being kept at the garage and demanded Tk30,000 from its owner.
Sensing something suspicious, local people informed Jatrabari police. Police then went to the spot and found that none of the four men was a police officer.
The men were attempting to intimidate the garage owner and extort money by falsely identifying themselves as police officers.
A team of Jatrabari police arrested the four at around 7:30pm.
Legal proceedings against the arrested men are underway.
