Islamic speaker and Kushtia-3 lawmaker from Jamaat-e-Islami Mufti Amir Hamza has filed a petition with the High Court seeking anticipatory bail in a case filed in Sirajganj over remarks about Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmood Tuku.
The petition is likely to be heard today (27 April) by a High Court bench led by Justice Zahid Sarwar Kajal, according to court sources.
On 21 April, a court issued an arrest warrant against Amir in connection with the defamation case over alleged derogatory remarks about Tuku.
The order was issued by a judge of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Sirajganj after the lawmaker failed to appear before the court despite being summoned earlier.
The case was filed on 2 April by Humayun Kabir, additional public prosecutor of the Sirajganj District and Sessions Judge Court and general secretary of the district bar association.
In the complaint, he alleged that Amir made highly offensive remarks by calling Tuku an “atheist” and also made derogatory comments about Islam.
According to the case statement, the complaint was filed under sections 296, 500 and 504 of the Penal Code.
The issue stems from remarks made on 26 March, when the minister delivered a speech paying tribute to the heroes of the 1971 Liberation War.
Following that, during a discussion held before Jummah prayers at Hatsh Haripur Boro Jame Mosque in Kushtia Sadar, Amir Hamza allegedly described him as “an atheist” and “anti-Islamic,” leading to the filing of the case.
