Two people have been killed in separate shooting incidents in Raozan of Chattogram within two days, heightening fear among residents.
A Jubo Dal activist has died two days after being shot in Raozan.
He was shot by armed assailants around 10pm yesterday (26 April) in the Ishan Bhattaerhat area of Kodolpur union and died on the way to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
The deceased was identified as Muhammad Nasir Uddin, a resident of South Shamshernagar village under Ward No 6 of Kodolpur union.
The victim’s nephew, Md Samrat, confirmed the matter to TBS. He said Nasir was first taken to Raozan Upazila Health Complex after being shot. He was later referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where he died on the way.
According to police and local sources, a group of armed miscreants opened fire indiscriminately targeting Nasir around 10pm, leaving him critically injured. He sustained multiple bullet wounds. The attackers fled the scene as locals rushed in.
Earlier, around 3am Saturday, BNP supporter Kausaruzzaman Bablu was shot dead in Ward No 9 of the municipality. Following the latest incident, panic has spread again in the area.
Chattogram North district Jubo Dal Vice President Saber Sultan said, “Nasir was an activist of the organisation and was targeted in the attack.” He condemned the incident and demanded swift arrest of those involved.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Raozan Police Station, Sajedul Islam, said armed assailants shot Nasir and fled. Police have visited the scene and drives are underway to arrest those involved.
Meanwhile, police have arrested two accused named in the case over Bablu’s killing. Md Shafi, 39, and Md Sumon, 33, were detained from East Raozan area during a special drive on Saturday night. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining accused and recover the weapons used.
Locals alleged that violence has increased in Raozan in recent times over political rivalry, dominance disputes, and extortion.
At least 20 people have been killed in the past one and a half years, raising concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation.
