A 13-month-old child has died with measles-like symptoms in Barishal, as the ongoing outbreak in the region continues to claim lives.
The deceased, identified as Saimun, hailed from Kalapara in Patuakhali district.
The child died at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, bringing the total death toll in the Barishal division to 29.
The information was confirmed today (8 May) by the office of the divisional health director in Barishal.
According to official data, 103 new patients with measles-like symptoms were admitted to government hospitals across the division between 8am yesterday (7 May) and 8am today.
With this, the total number of reported cases has reached 4,363, while 3,502 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals.
Among the newly admitted patients, 33 were at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, nine at Barishal General Hospital, and seven at other government hospitals in Barishal district.
In addition, 31 patients were reported in Patuakhali, 11 in Bhola, eight in Pirojpur, and four in Barguna.
No new cases were reported in Jhalokathi during the last 24 hours.
So far, the highest number of deaths- 16 childre has been reported at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Other fatalities include six in Bhola, five in Borguna and two in Jhalokathi.
Acting divisional health director Dr Mohammad Lokman Hakim said the measles situation has shown signs of improvement.
“The outbreak has somewhat declined. As the vaccination programme is ongoing, its benefits are beginning to be visible. We hope the number of cases will gradually reduce to zero,” he said.
