A ruling party lawmaker has alleged several “torture cells” are operating in different parts of Gazipur and called on law enforcement agencies to immediately investigate the matter.
The allegation was made by Md Mazibur Rahman, member of parliament for Gazipur-1, during the monthly District Law and Order Committee meeting held at Bhawal Conference Room of the Gazipur Deputy Commissioner’s Office today (14 June).
The meeting, chaired by Gazipur Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Md Nurul Karim Bhuiyan, discussed the overall law and order situation in the district.
Speaking at the meeting, MP Mazibur Rahman claimed that at least three to four torture cells have been established in various locations across Gazipur.
“This is not something we can accept,” he said, urging police authorities to identify those responsible and take swift action.
He further stressed that if any member of the ruling party is found involved in such activities, legal action should be taken against them as well.
The lawmaker also called for the preparation of an accurate list of criminals to ensure their prompt prosecution.
“Criminals must be brought under the law quickly through a precise list. At the same time, innocent people should not be harassed in the process of apprehending offenders,” he said.
He also urged police to strengthen patrols to curb theft, robbery and snatching incidents and to enhance public safety.
Deputy Commissioner Nurul Karim Bhuiyan said the allegation would be taken seriously and instructed the police department to investigate the matter immediately.
He noted that such “torture cell” practices had been reported during the tenure of the previous Awami League government but stressed that there is no place for such activities under the current administration.
The deputy commissioner also expressed concern over a recent rise in theft incidents at several key locations in Gazipur Metropolitan area.
In addition, he emphasised the need to raise social awareness to address the growing trend of suicides in the district.
