Mirza Faisal Amin, younger brother of BNP President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, among three BNP aspirants who submitted nomination forms today (16 September) to contest the Thakurgaon-1 by-election on the party ticket.
The other two aspirants are Sultanul Ferdous Chowdhury Nomro and Obaidullah Masud.
The three will face interviews before the BNP nomination board at the party chairman’s Gulshan office on 19 September according to the party.
Faisal Amin, president of Thakurgaon district BNP, submitted his form to BNP Assistant Office Secretary Tarikul Islam Tenzing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office around noon.
Central Jubo Dal Vice-President Kamal Anwar Ahmed and Thakurgaon district BNP General Secretary Payagam Ali, among others, were present at the time.
Sultanul Ferdous Chowdhury and Obaidullah Masud later submitted their forms separately.
Faisal Amin is a former mayor of Thakurgaon municipality. Masud is a vice-president of Thakurgaon district BNP and a former Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatradal leader, while Ferdous is also a district BNP vice-president and a former upazila chairman.
The three had collected BNP nomination forms yesterday (15 September), when the party began distributing forms for the by-election.
BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on 12 September that the party would finalise its candidate for the Thakurgaon-1 by-election on 18 September based on the nomination board’s decision.
The seat fell vacant after Mirza Fakhrul, the former MP for Thakurgaon-1, was elected BNP president on 20 August. He took oath the following day, after which the seat was declared vacant.
The Election Commission announced the election schedule on 10 September.
The by-election is scheduled for 29 October.
