The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has formed a monitoring team to prevent shops and other structures from occupying footpaths in the Mirpur-10 area.
According to a notice issued by the city corporation today (3 October), the team was formed following instructions from DNCC Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton.
The team will regularly inspect the area to ensure that footpaths remain free from encroachment, the notice said.
If any shop, structure or other installation is found occupying a footpath, the authorities will seize the goods and equipment involved and take legal action against those responsible, it added.
The move comes days after police and city corporation officials came under attack during an eviction drive in Mirpur on 30 September.
Hawkers allegedly vandalised vehicles and set three DNCC garbage trucks ablaze during clashes that erupted after a fire broke out in the area.
The Home Minister later attributed the clashes partly to a coordination gap among the authorities involved in the operation.
Police said eight to nine personnel were injured and around 30 people were detained in connection with the clashes.
A passer-by was also injured after hawkers allegedly attacked him with bricks and helmets, police said.
