The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has raided four restaurants and bars in Dhaka to investigate possible revenue evasion involving illegally stored alcohol, according to the revenue authority.
The establishments are Raw Canvas Restaurant, Habib Hotel International, Margarita Lounge and Fu-Wang Bowling & Services Ltd.
Verification activities are underway to examine their alcohol and alcoholic-product stocks, the legal sources of the products, import and purchase-related documents, payment of applicable customs duties, VAT and taxes, and the legality of the products, according to an NBR press release issued today (3 October).
NBR sources said at least one of the four establishments is owned by Sheikh Nur Islam, the father-in-law of content creator Salman Muqtadir.
The NBR said the CIID will disclose the findings of the raids at 10:30pm today.
Asked whether the raids were related to the recent vandalism of Salman Muqtadir’s studio, his subsequent remarks or the government’s response to the incident, a senior NBR intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, denied any such connection.
He told The Business Standard that the raids were part of the NBR’s routine and ongoing activities and had no other connection.
