A student of Chittagong University (CU) died of electrocution while hanging a banner at the main gate of Shaheed Abdur Rab Hall last night (8 September).
The deceased was identified as Ariful Islam, a student of the Zoology Department of the 2024-25 academic session and a promising university athlete.
Witnesses said the incident occurred around 9:55pm when Ariful was hanging a banner for a departmental programme at the hall gate. He came in contact with an electric line, received an electric shock and became suspended from the gate.
Students then disconnected the electricity and rescued him. He was taken to the CU Medical Centre, where duty doctor Dr Abu Tayeb provided emergency treatment and advised shifting him to a city hospital. He was later taken to Evercare Hospital in Chattogram, where a doctor declared him dead at around 10:45 pm.
Dr Abu Tayeb, chief physician of the CU Medical Centre, said, “I came to know about the incident after receiving a call from the ambulance. The ambulance was ready. As soon as the body arrived, we took the necessary measures and sent him to the hospital.”
Ariful was an active athlete and had won first place in the 800-metre event and second place in the 5,000-metre event at the university’s annual sports competition. He also secured second place in the 800-metre event at an inter-university athletics competition.
Prof Dr Mosammat Rasheda Chowdhury, chairman of the Zoology Department, confirmed the matter.
