A Chittagong Port worker was killed after a covered van hit his bicycle this afternoon (30 August).
The accident occurred around 4:30pm in the port’s overflow yard area, confirmed Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim.
The deceased was identified as Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, a jetty sarkar of Bismillah Shipping Agency.
Hamim said a covered van of Fakir Apparels Ltd, bearing Dhaka Metro-U-14-2463, was heading towards the port gate after loading goods when it hit Nasir’s bicycle, leaving him critically injured.
Nasir suffered severe injuries to his head and body.
He was immediately rescued and taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital by ambulance under the supervision of port security personnel. Doctors on duty later declared him dead.
Port security officials detained the covered van and took it into custody following the accident. However, the driver, identified as 40-year-old Rafiqul Mina, fled the scene, according to the authorities.
The port authorities said further legal action would be taken against those responsible.
