Legal action has been taken against those involved in the killing of a dog, throwing it into a river with a brick tied around its neck in Narsingdi, following Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s directive.
The incident recently went viral on social media, sparking widespread public outrage.
Deeply disturbed after watching the footage, the prime minister ordered immediate action against those responsible, his Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu said.
He said the incident took place near Nagariakandi Bridge in Narsingdi Sadar upazila.
A young man allegedly tied a brick around the dog’s neck before throwing it into the river, where the animal struggled before drowning.
The disturbing video quickly spread across social media, prompting widespread public outrage.
Shiplu said the prime minister was deeply saddened by the incident and expressed wonder that such cruelty towards a helpless animal could occur in a civilised society.
Following his directive, members of the Narsingdi district unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal tracked down the accused, Mohammad Ali, and handed him over to the police. He has since been arrested.
It has been alleged that a local woman, Shahin Ara, had instigated Mohammad Ali to kill the dog in order to get rid of what she considered a nuisance. She is currently absconding.
Local residents claim that Mohammad Ali has long been addicted to drugs.
Law enforcement agencies are investigating the matter.
