BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has warned of “signs of conspiracy” surrounding the country’s political situation, democracy, and stability ahead of the 45th death anniversary of late President Ziaur Rahman.
He said the government could be criticised and its mistakes pointed out, but any form of conspiracy or politics of destabilization would be dangerous for the country.
Rizvi made the remarks at a press conference held at the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan in the capital today (29 May).
“Martyr President Ziaur Rahman played a historic role in establishing democracy and restoring multi-party politics in the country. From ensuring press freedom to building a production-oriented economy, Zia demonstrated courageous leadership in every sector,” he said.
Rizvi alleged that Ziaur Rahman was assassinated on 30 May 1981 at the Chattogram Circuit House through a domestic and international conspiracy because of his uncompromising stance in protecting the country’s interests and his belief in independence and nationalist ideals.
Referring to the current political situation, Rizvi said crime, disorder, and various crises could exist in any state. “However, it is the responsibility of an elected government to take prompt action and ensure the rule of law,” he added.
He said the government was taking action against wrongdoing and criminal activities and that the public was witnessing those efforts.
Highlighting several social welfare initiatives undertaken by the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Rizvi said programs such as “Family Card,” “Agriculture Card,” and “Health Card” would play a significant role in improving the living standards of ordinary people.
He further said institutions including the Election Commission, administration, and police must remain neutral and accountable in order to strengthen democracy.
“The democratic process achieved through long struggles and sacrifices must not be obstructed in any way,” he added.
Announcing an eight-day program marking Ziaur Rahman’s death anniversary, Rizvi said party flags would be flown at half-mast and black flags hoisted at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan and across the country at 6am tomorrow (30 May).
He added that senior party leaders, led by Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman, would place wreaths and offer Fateha at Ziaur Rahman’s grave in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at 11am.
Rizvi also said the BNP and its associate bodies would organise discussion meetings, photo exhibitions, prayer sessions, and programs for distributing food and clothing among underprivileged people in different areas of Dhaka.
