Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the ruling BNP, issued a show-cause notice last night (20 September) to Sazzad Hossain Hridoy, organisational secretary of its Chittagong University unit, following a Facebook post protesting fuel price hikes.
Chhatra Dal Office Secretary Jahangir Alam signed the notice, giving Sazzad 48 hours to submit a written explanation for his social media activity.
Earlier that night, Sazzad posted on his personal Facebook account protesting the increase in fuel prices.
“Since the beginning of my involvement in student politics, most of the BNP programmes I participated in were against the price hikes of oil, gas and electricity,” he wrote.
“Fuel prices have been increased today. I protest this,” he added.
The show-cause notice was served shortly after the post was made. However, the notice made no direct reference to the Facebook post.
It stated that allegations of “breach of organisational discipline” have been raised against Sazzad while holding a responsible position in the CU unit of Chhatra Dal.
The notice read, “You are directed to submit a written explanation within the next 48 hours as to why permanent organisational disciplinary action should not be taken against you.”
It further instructed him to present his explanation in person at the central office in the presence of the central president and general secretary of Chhatra Dal.
The notice mentioned that the directive was issued on the instructions of Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir.
When asked about the matter, Sazzad said, “I have been served a show-cause notice. I will appear at the designated place and provide my explanation.”
Abdullah Al Noman, general secretary of the CU unit of Chhatra Dal, said, “It remains unclear whether the notice was served due to the Facebook post or for any other reason.”
Yesterday, the government increased the retail prices of diesel, octane, petrol, and kerosene by Tk20 per litre, with the revised rates taking effect from today.
With the new price adjustment, this is the second time the BNP government has hiked fuel prices after assuming power in February this year. The last price hike was back in April.
