A local BNP leader in Cumilla has died just hours after announcing his intention to contest the union chairman’s post.
Saiful Islam Khokon, joint convener of Cumilla’s Chandina upazila BNP, died early today (8 September).
SM Mizan, general secretary of Cumilla North Jatiotabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas), confirmed his death.
Earlier, Khokon spent the day campaigning in Shuhilpur Union yesterday with party leaders, activists and supporters.
Addressing rumours and discussions that he might step down from the race before the upcoming local government polls, Khokon assured his followers of his firm resolve to contest the election.
He said, “Nothing except my death can remove me from this election.”
He returned home around 9pm last night after the campaign.
Around midnight, he suddenly complained of body pain and was rushed to a local hospital by his relatives.
He was later taken to Gouripur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead from heart failure.
The local BNP leader had earlier served as acting president of Chandina upazila Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the party.
