The investigation into the 2013 violent crackdown on a Hefajat-e-Islam rally at Dhaka’s Shapla Chattar is nearly complete, International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam has said.
Aminul said at least 32 people were killed at Shapla Chattar alone, with killings taking place in other places including Narayanganj and Chattogram.
Speaking to journalists at his office, the chief prosecutor said that the ICT’s investigation agency is set to complete the probe report by 7 June.
The 18-month-long investigation will reveal the roles of high-level government officials, law enforcement personnel and then-ruling party members in the massacre. It will also shed light on those who financed it, Aminul said.
Earlier, on 5 April, ICT ordered a comprehensive investigation report within two months regarding allegations of crimes against humanity involving former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 20 others for the reported massacre and torture that occurred during a Hefajat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel in 2013.
Following the proceedings, a two-member bench led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder scheduled the next hearing for 7 June.
The court’s decision came after Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim requested an extension to finalise the probe.
