Classes suspended after ‘JCD factional clash’ at Mymensingh Medical College

Classes and examinations at Mymensingh Medical College have been suspended following a clash reportedly between two factions of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on the campus which left two students seriously injured.

The injured were identified as Md Muaz, a supporter of Tanvir Abdullah, convener of ollege unit JCD and Mir Hamidur, supporter of Nur-e-Jawad Rutap, JCD’s senior joint convener. Both of them are third year students at the college.

Nazrul Islam, in-charge of Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital police camp, said Muaz visited Hamidur’s room in the dormitory last night (17 April) where they locked into a heated argument over refueling a motorcycle, leading to a scuffle took.

At one stage, Hamidur along with his associates beat Muaz up mercilessly.

Later, Muaz along with his associates hit Hamidur with a steep pipe when he was taking tea outside the campus, triggering a clash between supporters of both groups.

Muaz was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment on Saturday morning as his condition is stated to be critical while Hamidur is currently undergoing treatment at Ward No. 6 of the hospital.

Both suffered head injuries, he added.

Shibirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station, said police arrested Nafiul Islam in this connection.

Meanwhile, the college authorities announced the suspension of all classes and examinations for seven days after an emergency meeting of the academic council held on Saturday.

Students were instructed to leave their dormitories by 8am today (18 April).

Prof, Dr. Md. Nazmul Alam Khan, Principal of the college said a three-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the incident.

Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, he said.
