Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife have been taken into police custody for questioning following the recovery of the hanging body of his second wife.
DMP Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Ibn Mizan disclosed the information to reporters after leaving NAM Bhaban, opposite the parliament building, around 10pm today (20 September).
Earlier, around 7pm, police recovered the hanging body of the lawmaker’s second wife, Mariam Khatun, 19, from Flat 203 on the third floor of Building 5 of NAM Bhaban under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
After preparing an inquest report, police sent the body to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy. CID and PBI teams also collected evidence from the scene.
Shortly before 10pm, an ambulance carrying the body left NAM Bhaban. Nazrul and his first wife were taken away in a microbus following the ambulance.
Speaking at the scene, DC Ibn Mizan said police received information about a hanging body at NAM Bhaban shortly after 7pm.
Teams from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, the Detective Branch and CID went to the scene and found that the flat belonged to Gazi Nazrul Islam, he said.
“We have taken Gazi Nazrul Islam, MP for Satkhira-4, and his first wife into custody for questioning,” the DC said.
Asked whether the death was a murder or suicide, he said the matter was under investigation.
He also declined to say whether Nazrul and his first wife were present at the flat when the incident occurred, saying the information could not be disclosed in the interest of the investigation.
