Two under-trial prisoners die at DMCH after falling ill in jail

Two under-trial prisoners of Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on yesterday (23 September) night.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Iftekhar Mahmud, 36, son of Mahbub Alam of Pirerbagh in Mirpur area and Mohammad Tofozzal Hossain Palash, 38, son of Ali Hossain of the Bagbari area under Darus Salam Police Station of the capital.
Aminul Islam, a prison guard, said Iftekhar, suddenly fell ill inside the jail on 19 September.
He was taken to DMCH the same day and admitted to the Medicine Department, where he died around 9pm yesterday.
Meanwhile, Tofozzal Hossain Palash, suddenly fell ill and became unconscious inside the jail on Wednesday night, said Masum, another prison guard.
He was taken to DMCH around 10:30pm, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead at around 11:30pm.
However, the prison authorities did not reveal the charges or cases for which the two men had been detained.
Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, said the bodies were at the hospital morgue for autopsies.
