A writ petition has been filed with the High Court challenging the legality of a government notification that banned all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
Deputy Attorney General Nur Mohammad Azmi confirmed the filing to the media today (7 September).
According to court sources, Munshiganj resident Md Al Amin filed the petition, with Advocate Yunus Ali representing him.
The writ is scheduled to be heard before a High Court bench comprising Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan.
The petitioner has sought a rule asking why the 12 May 2025 notification issued by the Public Security Division of the Home Ministry should not be declared to have been issued without lawful authority.
He has also sought a stay on the operation of the notification until the rule is disposed of.
The Public Security Division issued the notification on 12 May last year, declaring all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated, associate and fraternal organisations prohibited until the completion of trials against their leaders and activists before the International Crimes Tribunal.
The ban covers publications, campaigns through the media, online platforms and social media, as well as rallies, meetings, gatherings and conferences organised by the party and its affiliated organisations.
Al Amin, a resident of Sreenagar in Munshiganj, filed the writ challenging the legality of the notification.
