Police have arrested the wife and son of a returnee expatriate in connection with his killing in Chattogram’s Rangunia.
According to a press release issued by Chattogram District Police today (1 May), the deceased, Md Alamgir, 40, was allegedly attacked by his wife and son following an argument at their home in the Kamar Tila area of Uttar Padua under South Rangunia Police Station.
Police said the incident took place at around 1:30am on 28 April, when a dispute broke out between family members over a trivial matter.
At one stage, Alamgir allegedly smashed his wife’s mobile phone and threatened her with a machete.
Enraged by his actions, his wife, Rahima Begum, 35, and son, Rabiul Hasan Rakib, 18, allegedly attacked him indiscriminately with another machete, leaving him critically injured.
He was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where he later died while undergoing treatment.
To divert attention from the incident, the mother and son initially told neighbours that unidentified assailants had carried out the attack, police said.
Following the killing, Alamgir’s father filed a murder case against unidentified individuals.
Police later formed an investigation team under the supervision of the additional superintendent of police (Crime and Ops), in coordination with the assistant superintendent of police of Mirsharai Circle and South Rangunia Police Station.
During the investigation, police said technological evidence and an analysis of the surrounding circumstances raised suspicion about the involvement of family members.
Acting on that suspicion, police conducted a raid in Uttar Padua area today and arrested Rahima and Rakib.
During questioning, investigators uncovered details of the family dispute and the events leading up to the killing, according to police.
The two were later produced before a court and gave confessional statements, police added.
