Eric Swalwell, the incumbent Democrat in this district, did not seek reelection, as he was originally planning to run for governor. The open seat set off a crowded primary in a district in which Swalwell received almost 70 percent of the vote in 2024. The leading contenders for the seat are Aisha Wahab, a state senator endorsed by the California Democratic Party, and Melissa Hernandez, a former mayor of Dublin who is president of the BART Board of Directors. They will face off against Wendy Huang, a Republican, among other challengers.
As a result of Swalwell’s resignation in early April following numerous allegations of sexual assault and misconduct, voters in the 14th district will also vote in a special primary on June 16 to fill this seat until January (two weeks after the regular primary). A candidate can win the seat outright in the special primary by receiving more than 50 percent of the vote. If not, the race would advance to a special general election in August.
