A union parishad member was abducted at gunpoint in Cox’s Bazar’s Ramu early today (22 April).
The incident occurred around 6am on the Eidgaon-Eidghar road in the Paner Chora Dhala area, said Eidghar police outpost in-charge Sub-Inspector Md Khurshed Alam.
The victim, Rustam Ali, 40, is a member of ward 9 of Eidghar union. He is the son of Mohammad Hossain from Porania Para.
SI Khurshed Alam said, citing eyewitnesses and locals, that Rustam was returning home from Eidgaon station in a jeep along with a driver and another person when a group of armed attackers stopped the vehicle.
The attackers beat all three people and looted mobile phones, cash and other belongings before abducting Rustam Ali. They later released the driver and the other passenger.
The two victims later informed police after returning. A police team immediately visited the scene.
Police are continuing efforts to identify those involved and rescue the abducted union parishad member, said Khurshed Alam.
