The central committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the ruling BNP, yesterday suspended its two leaders of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology unit from their posts on charges of assaulting a student who uploaded a Facebook post about the low quality of food served at a dormitory canteen.
Md Zahangir Alam, office secretary of the central committee, issued a press release in the afternoon, saying that the action was taken following the allegation of breaching organisational discipline.
Those suspended are Hasibur Rahman, communication secretary of the university unit Chhatra Dal and a student of the Political Studies department, and Tarek Rahman, co-office secretary of the organisation and a student of the Statistics department.
Earlier, the accused allegedly assaulted the student near the university’s main gate around 10:45pm on Saturday, centring the Facebook post.
The victim is Khairul Khondokar, a student of the Sociology department’s 2023-24 academic session.
On Friday, Khairul took to the Shah Paran Hall Facebook group to upload a post mentioning the hall provost that rotten fish was being served at the hall canteen.
He said Chhatra Dal leader Tarek later contacted him and told him that a senior hall official was unhappy with the post and asked him to apologise for it. But he refused to comply with it.
As the delivery of low-quality food continued even after the post, Khairul again complained about it. When he went to the university’s main gate on the night of Saturday, Hasibur and Tarek questioned him about the matter.
At one stage of the altercation between them, Hasibur punched him in the chest while Tarek repeatedly hit him on the head and face. Later, general students rescued him and took him to a hospital.
Contacted, Tarek said Khairul misbehaved, which led to a scuffle between the two sides.
Following the incident, students staged a sit-in in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence late Saturday, demanding punishment for those responsible.
