Tributes are pouring in from across the global music community after Michael Tilson Thomas, the Grammy-winning conductor, composer and pianist passed away at the age of 81.
Following a long battle with Glioblastoma, Thomas died on April 22, five years after his diagnosis.
Despite his condition, he remained committed to music and continued to conduct and create well into the later stages of his disease.
It is pertinent to mention that Michael Tilson Thomas served as music director of the San Francisco Symphony for 25 years, helping shape its global reputation. He earned 12 Grammy Awards and received numerous honours, including National Medal of Arts and recognition at the Kennedy Center Honors.
Notably, Thomas’ influence extended beyond concert hall as he was also the co-founder of the New World Symphony, mentoring generations of young musicians.
The New World Symphony led the tributes writing, “As he is reunited with his beloved Joshua, our thoughts are with MTT’s many family members, friends and colleagues. It is with great honor and responsibility that we carry MTT’s pioneering and generous spirit forward together.”
Furthermore, Michael Bearden wrote in the comments section, “MTT was one of my favorite maestro’s ever! He will be missed and his legacy will live on!”
Meanwhile a fan added, “What a sad news to read what a legacy he leaves behind. So grateful for all he did for the Classical music scene in Miami. Lots of love, light and strength to his loved ones, and a peaceful transition to him.”
Moreover, Arts Access Miami also paid tribute via their official Instagram handle: “It is with great sadness that we are saying goodbye to such a big figure, the music will live forever.”
Thomas’ passing comes just months after the passing of his husband, Joshua Robison, with whom he shared over five decades of life and partnership.
