Traditional boat race returns to Gorai River after 4-year hiatus

The traditional boat race returned to the Gorai River in Kushtia today (18 September) after a four-year hiatus, with nine teams from Kushtia and other districts taking part and thousands of spectators gathering along both banks.

The three-day competition was inaugurated at the Ghorai Ghat area of Kushtia town this afternoon, with people of different ages gathering along the riverbanks to enjoy the traditional event.

Many spectators arrived with their families, while others came in groups to watch the boats race along the river. The rhythmic strokes of the boatmen and their calls of “heiyo re heiyo” created a festive atmosphere on both banks.

The organisers said the previous boat race was held on the Gorai River in 2022. After a four-year gap, the competition has been organised again this year, with boats from Kushtia and other districts taking part.

The opening ceremony was chaired by organising committee president Imran Hossain Yunus. Kushtia-1 lawmaker Reza Ahmed Bachchu Mollah inaugurated the competition as the chief guest, while reserved women’s lawmaker Farida Yasmin attended as a special guest.

The organisers said the event was aimed at keeping young people away from drugs and other forms of moral degradation while introducing the younger generation to the disappearing traditions of rural Bengal.

The boatmen participating in the competition also expressed enthusiasm about taking part in the event after the long break.

As the decorated boats sped along the river to the rhythmic strokes of the oarsmen, spectators on both banks cheered and enjoyed the spectacle.

The organisers said motorcycles, refrigerators, televisions and other prizes have been arranged for the winners.

The three-day competition will conclude on 20 September with the closing ceremony.
