A tourist drowned while bathing in Tanguar Haor in Sunamganj yesterday (7 August).
The deceased was identified as Ali Akbar Khan, 72, son of the late Ahmed Ali Khan of Gunerghati village in Sirajganj Sadar upazila. He was living in Jahangirnagar Housing Society in Savar, Dhaka.
The accident occurred around 4:30pm near a koroch tree in the Watch Tower area of Tanguar Haor in Tahirpur upazila, confirmed Tahirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Faruk Ahmed.
Anisur Rahman, a friend of Ali Akbar’s son-in-law Khairul Hasan and a fellow passenger on the same boat, said Ali Akbar had a heart condition.
According to Anisur, Ali Akbar was bathing while holding onto a koroch tree near the Watch Tower when his hand suddenly slipped. He then went underwater and suffered a cardiac arrest in panic, Anisur said.
His companions rescued him and rushed him to Tahirpur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
The OC said preliminary information suggested Ali Akbar fell underwater after losing his grip while bathing near a tree in the Watch Tower area.
As the family has not filed any complaint, the body will be handed over to his wife, he added.
