Tension flared between the leaders of hall union and Chhatra Dal at a hall of the University of Dhaka on Tuesday night (5 May) over putting up a banner.
The incident took place around 10pm at Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall when members of the hall union attempted to hang a banner at the main gate, triggering a confrontation with leaders of Chhatra Dal.
According to students at the hall, the dispute stemmed from a banner hung on Monday (4 May) by the hall union, which accused a Chhatra Dal Joint Convener Sajjad Hossain Robin, of involvement in the alleged assault of the hall’s Literary and Cultural Secretary, Md Julhas, at Shahbagh Police Station.
The banner, which included Robin’s photo, was later removed by Chhatra Dal leaders.
When hall union members tried to reinstall the banner on Tuesday night, tensions escalated between the two groups.
The hall union’s Vice President Sadiq Hossain Shikder told The Business Standard that Chhatra Dal members had earlier burned the banner demanding justice over the “attack” on Julhas. “When we tried to put up the banner again, they obstructed and injured one of our members.”
“We will hold a press conference on the matter,” he added.
However, the accused Chhatra Dal leader denied any involvement in the incident. He alleged that repeated attempts to portray him as an attacker had provoked the situation. “I was not involved in any attack,” Robin said.
No immediate reports of police or university authorities’ action were available at the time of filing this report.
