The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has set 17 November, 24 November and 1 December for final appeal hearings in the Narayanganj seven-murder case, the Abrar Fahad murder case and the Major (retd) Sinha murder case, respectively.
Today (18 October), Chamber Judge Justice Md Rezaul Haque fixed the dates for the hearings, Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kajal told journalists.
Abrar Fahad murder case
On the night of 6 October 2019, Abrar Fahad, a Buet student, was beaten to death by a group of Chhatra League leaders and activists at the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall.
A Dhaka court on 8 December 2021 sentenced 20 Buet students to death and five more to life imprisonment for killing fellow student Abrar Fahad for his social media post criticising the Bangladesh-India deal on sharing the water of the Feni River.
After hearing appeals against the trial court’s verdict and death references, the High Court delivered its judgment on 16 March 2025, upholding the death sentences of 20 accused and life imprisonment for five others.
The case is now awaiting a final hearing before the Appellate Division.
Major Sinha murder case
Major (retd) Sinha Md Rashed Khan was shot dead by police at the Shamlapur checkpost in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, on the night of 31 July 2020.
After the killing, police arrested two of his associates on narcotics charges the same night.
Suspended Teknaf police OC Pradeep Kumar Das and inspector Liaquat Ali were sentenced to death for killing Sinha.
The High Court in June 2025 upheld the death sentence for the two.
Seven-murder case
On 27 April 2014, seven people, including Nazrul Islam, his aides, driver Jahangir Alam, senior lawyer Chandan Sarker, and Chandan’s driver, were abducted.
Their bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya River three days later.
Following the incident, two cases were filed at Fatullah police station — one by Selina Islam and another by Bijoy Kumar Paul, a relative of Chandan Sarker.
Charge sheets in the cases were submitted in April 2015.
On 16 January 2017, the Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Court delivered its verdict, sentencing Nur Hossain, three former RAB officials, and 26 others to death, while nine others received various terms of imprisonment.
The convicted people later appealed to the High Court. On 22 August 2017, the court upheld the death sentence for 15 individuals, including Nur Hossain and Tareque Sayeed. Eleven others were sentenced to life imprisonment, while nine received varying terms.
