Japanese investors have announced plans to initially invest $1.2 billion in Bangladesh’s tourism and hospitality sectors, according to a press release from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.
The announcement came at a meeting with a Japanese investor delegation at the ministry’s conference room at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka today (18 October). Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat attended the meeting as the chief guest.
Speaking at the meeting, the minister said Bangladesh had diverse tourism potential, with a rich combination of natural beauty, heritage and culture.
He highlighted the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest; Cox’s Bazar, the world’s longest uninterrupted natural sandy beach; and the tea gardens of Sylhet as major attractions for international visitors.
The minister said the government welcomed foreign investment in the country’s tourism sector.
Describing Japan as a longstanding friend of Bangladesh, he said the country had contributed to the development of several major infrastructure projects in Bangladesh. The government was ready to work with Japanese investors to develop the tourism industry, he added.
He also said the government wanted to pursue foreign investment through a public-private partnership model that would ensure a win-win outcome for both sides.
