State Minister for Health and Family Welfare MA Muhit has been appointed president of the Parliamentary Caucus on Disability Rights, formed to strengthen parliamentary engagement and protect the rights of persons with disabilities.
The Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat issued a notification on the formation of the caucus today (28 October).
Muhit, a lawmaker representing Sirajganj-6, will lead the caucus, which includes nine other members of parliament: Mohammed Akteruzzaman (Mymensingh-10); Newaz Halima Arly, Nilufar Chowdhury Moni, Nadia Pathan Papon, Salina Sultana, Mst Nazmun Nahar, Tasmia Prodhan, Mahabuba Hakim and Mst Nusrat Tabassum Joty, all representing reserved women’s seats.
The caucus aims to strengthen legislative and policy initiatives to ensure the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities. It will oversee the implementation of relevant programmes, promote inclusive budget allocations and accessibility, and encourage greater participation in education, healthcare, employment and social protection.
It will also monitor the implementation of the National Disability Act and Bangladesh’s international commitments on disability rights.
Another key objective is to establish regular dialogue between lawmakers and persons with disabilities and their organisations.
The Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad will serve as the caucus’s chief patron, while the Deputy Speaker will act as patron. The Parliament Secretariat will provide the necessary administrative support for its activities.
