A suspected snatcher was killed after being accidentally stabbed by a fellow gang member while they were attempting to rob two pedestrians in the capital’s Kadamtali area of Jatrabari early today (29 August).
The incident took place around 3:30am on Nama Shyampur Shaheed Muktar Hossain Road, police said.
Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kadamtali Police Station, confirmed the incident to The Business Standard.
The deceased was identified as Md Joni, 35, who lived in a rented house in Nabarun Goli near Shyampur Bridge. His father is Tota Mia and his wife is Swapna Begum, 30.
According to police, Touhidul Islam, 28, and Rakibul Sardar, 35, had travelled to Dhaka from their village home in Satkhira.
After arriving in Postogola, the two got off a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Baraitala and were walking towards their home along Nama Shyampur Shaheed Muktar Hossain Road when three people, including Joni, intercepted them and attempted to rob them.
When Touhidul and Rakibul shouted for help, one of the snatchers pulled out a switchblade knife and tried to attack them.
One of the pedestrians moved away, causing the knife to hit Joni instead, according to police.
The other two suspected snatchers then fled, leaving Joni injured at the scene.
After receiving a call through the national emergency service 999, a police patrol team rescued Joni and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police later handed over his body to his family following an autopsy.
“No case has been filed yet. The family has taken the body and will file a case after the burial. We are trying to arrest the two snatchers who fled,” The OC said.
