Commerce, Industries and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, MP, today (7 November) said 7 November is a significant day of changing the country’s history, marking the renewed establishment of the aspiration to protect the country’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman had inspired a sense of nationalism and self-confidence among the people, demonstrating that Bangladesh could move forward despite limited resources and various adversities,” he said.
The minister made the remarks while addressing a discussion as the chief guest at the District Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka.
The Sylhet district administration organised the programme marking the National Revolution and Solidarity Day.
The event also featured a prize distribution ceremony and a cultural programme.
Muktadir said the country must pursue economic recovery and ensure accountability at every level of the state by following the ideals of honesty and patriotism upheld by Former President Ziaur Rahman.
He stressed the need to strengthen the banking system and transform government institutions into people-friendly service organisations where citizens receive genuine and effective services.
Referring to Ziaur Rahman’s leadership, the minister said Bangladesh had achieved an important position and international recognition within a short period under his leadership.
The country’s relations with the Muslim world had also been strengthened, he added.
He said Ziaur Rahman’s examples of honesty, freedom from nepotism and patriotism continued to serve as a benchmark for the people.
The minister said people also expected BNP leaders and activists to demonstrate the same level of integrity, responsibility and commitment to ideals.
He further stressed the need to restore credibility and accountability in the Annual Development Programme (ADP), strengthen the banking sector and improve the quality of public services to revive the national economy.
He called upon all concerned to work sincerely towards achieving these goals.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun presided over the programme.
Officials of different government departments, political, social and cultural organisations, July fighters and journalists also attended the programme.
