Heavy rainfall over the next 10 days could trigger short-term flooding in parts of northern and north-eastern Bangladesh, particularly in Rangpur and Sylhet divisions, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
In its weekly water-level outlook published on Saturday, the FFWC said low-lying areas along the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in Rangpur, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat and Kurigram may face flooding within the next seven days.
Low-lying areas along the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj may also experience short-term flooding. Areas in Netrokona, Mymensingh, and Sherpur, situated near the Bhugai, Kangsha, and Someshwari rivers, may experience temporary inundation.
The FFWC said water levels in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma river systems may rise but are likely to remain below danger levels. Rivers in Chattogram division may also see a general rise, with occasional rapid increases.
The forecast, based on data from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the India Meteorological Department and global weather agencies, said heavy rainfall is likely between 21 and 28 June in Rangpur, Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions, as well as upstream areas of West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya.
The agency said the affected regions recorded above-normal rainfall over the past week and may continue to receive higher-than-normal precipitation through 2 July. Rainfall could reach 350-400mm in some areas.
In the forecast signed by Executive Engineer Sardar Uday Raihan, the FFWC advised residents of vulnerable areas to remain alert.
