Six people, including the in-charge of a river police outpost, were injured when unidentified gunmen attacked a patrol team on the Padma River in Pabna’s Ishwardi. One of the injured is reported to be in a critical condition.
The incident occurred between 1:10am and 1:50am today (22 April) in the Haripur area of the Padma River of Ishwardi upazila.
The injured have been identified as Khandaker Shafiqul Islam, in-charge of the Laxmikunda River Police Outpost, and police personnel Enamul Haque, Shahinur Haque, Nazmul Hasan, and Manik Mia. The boatman of the patrol boat was also injured.
According to police, a team from the Laxmikunda river police camp was conducting a routine patrol by boat. As they reached the Haripur point of the river, a group of armed criminals, already positioned there, opened fire on them.
All six victims sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to Pabna Sadar Hospital.
Shahinur Haque, who was shot in the eye, was later referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated. All injured are currently undergoing treatment.
Additional Superintendent of Police in Pabna, Md Mashiur Rahman, confirmed the incident and said additional police have been deployed to the area. Operations are ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible.
Kushtia Superintendent of Police Jashim Uddin told The Business Standard that a joint operation by Kushtia and Pabna police is ongoing. Police are working to determine the motive behind the attack and identify the armed group.
