Police have arrested a tenth-grade student in connection with the murder of Pir Shamim Jahangir, also known as Abdur Rahman, in Kushtia’s Daulatpur upazila.
The accused, 16-year-old Alamgir Hossain, was arrested last night (27 April), confirmed Daulatpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Arifur Rahman.
According to police sources, Alamgir was identified through video footage recorded during the incident.
However, the family has alleged that he was taken from home for questioning and later shown as an accused in the murder case.
Alamgir’s father, Tosilul Islam, said his son had gone to the scene out of curiosity after hearing about the incident and was not involved.
Relatives also claimed he was picked up when police failed to find another suspect.
The incident occurred on 11 April in Philipnagar area of Daulatpur, where hundreds of agitated locals allegedly attacked a darbar sharif, accusing Shamim of making offensive remarks about the Quran and Islam.
The attackers reportedly vandalised the premises and set parts of it on fire. Shamim died in the attack, while at least seven of Shamim’s followers were reportedly injured.
A murder case was filed on 13 April by the victim’s brother, naming four individuals and accusing 180 to 200 unidentified persons.
On 26 April, police arrested two other suspects in the case.
