The order follows IFIC Bank’s petition to recover more than Tk182 crore after the defendants failed to repay the outstanding loan.

A Chattogram court has ordered five months’ civil detention for former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, his wife and four others in a loan recovery case involving over Tk182 crore owed to IFIC Bank.
Judge and Joint District Judge of Chattogram Artha Rin Adalat-1 Md Helal Uddin passed the order today (8 October).
The court’s bench assistant Md Ershad confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
According to court records, IFIC Bank filed the execution case on 21 April to recover the decretal amount after the defendants failed to repay the dues.
The bank said the total outstanding stood at over Tk182 crore as of 20 April 2026, including Tk170.27 crore in principal.
The defendants are Rukmila Zaman, chairman and managing director of Aramit Thai Aluminium Ltd, directors SM Alamgir Chowdhury and Khorshedul Alam, shareholder and former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury and shareholders Jeba Zaman and Tanayem Zaman Chowdhury.
According to documents submitted by the bank, it had taken several steps to recover the dues, but the defendants failed to repay the outstanding amount.
The bank then sought civil detention orders against the defendants.
Following a hearing, the court ordered five months’ civil detention for all six defendants under the Money Loan Court Act, 2003.
