Md Rashed Khan has been appointed as political assistant to the prime minister on a contractual basis with the rank of secretary.
The appointment will take effect from the date he joins the post, subject to his relinquishing any professional, business or employment ties with any government, semi-government, private institution, organisation or other entity, said a gazette notification issued yesterday (19 July) by the Ministry of Public Administration.
The notification stated that he will serve for the duration of the prime minister’s term in office or until the prime minister is satisfied with his service, whichever comes first.
It further noted that the remaining terms and conditions of the appointment will be determined through a formal contract.
Rashed first came to national prominence as joint convener of the Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, the organisation at the forefront of the 2018 quota reform movement, while he was a student at the University of Dhaka.
He later played a key role in the formation of the Gono Odhikar Parishad and went on to serve as the party’s general secretary.
Rashed was expelled from the Gono Odhikar Parishad in late December 2025 on allegations of breaching party discipline. On 27 December last year, he formally joined the BNP.
