Qatar has expressed interest in recruiting skilled workers from Bangladesh in four sectors: electricians, welding, AC technicians and plumbing, while Bangladesh has requested approval to increase the number of visa centres in the country.
The development came after a meeting between Qatar’s Labour Minister Ali bin Saeed bin Samikh Al Marri and Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury in Dhaka today (18 May).
After the meeting, Ariful briefed reporters and told them that discussions focused on hiring skilled workers in these four sectors.
He said Qatar is emphasising skilled labour over unskilled workers, while Bangladesh is also encouraging the same approach and plans to send trained workers.
State Minister Nurul Haque, who was also present, said there was a discussion on strengthening labour cooperation.
He noted that Bangladesh aims to increase the number of workers going to Qatar, including imams and muezzins, whose numbers have declined in recent years.
He added that Qatar has agreed in principle to consider new opportunities for Bangladeshi workers in additional areas, including plumbing, welding, AC technology and electrical work.
Bangladesh currently has one visa centre in Qatar and has requested that more centres be approved to reduce difficulties faced by applicants, he said, adding that many people have to visit multiple times due to limited facilities.
Officials also said that visa processing is handled by a Bangladeshi company and stressed that applicants should not be subjected to harassment during the process.
