Actress Pori Moni appeared at the court premises today (5 November) to surrender and seek bail in a case filed over allegations of assault, vandalism and intimidation.
Her lawyer, Nilanjana Rifat (Surovi), confirmed the matter this morning, saying Pori Moni would surrender voluntarily and seek bail.
She arrived at the court premises around 9:30am and would appear before the court once the hearing was scheduled, the lawyer said, expressing hope that her bail would be granted.
On 4 November, Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Mahfuzur Rahman’s court issued arrest warrants against Pori Moni and her costume designer, Junaed Bogdadi Jimmy, also known as Jimi, after rejecting their time petitions. The court also set 23 December for recording witness statements.
On 18 March 2024, investigation officer Md Monir Hossain, an inspector with the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Dhaka district, submitted a report to the Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court, finding the allegations of assault and intimidation against Pori Moni and Jimmy substantiated.
However, the investigation found no evidence against another accused, Fatema Tuz Jannat Boni.
On 26 January last year, the same court framed charges against the accused and ordered the trial to begin.
Nasir Uddin filed the case at a Dhaka court on 6 July 2022.
According to the case statement, Pori Moni and her associates entered Savar Boat Club after midnight on 9 June 2021 and used a washroom on the second floor before sitting inside the club to consume alcohol.
The complaint says Nasir and his associate Shah Shahidul Alam were leaving the club around 1:15am when Pori Moni called Nasir over and asked them to sit with her for a while.
At one point, she allegedly tried to attract Nasir through obscene gestures and pressured him to provide a bottle of Blue Label whisky free of charge. When he refused, she verbally abused him, the complaint alleges.
During an ensuing altercation, Pori Moni allegedly threw a serving glass and her mobile phone at Nasir, injuring his head and chest. The complaint also accused her and her associates of assaulting him, threatening to kill him and vandalising property.
The complaint further alleged that Pori Moni threatened to use her connections with police officials to file false cases against Nasir and harass him.
Following the incident, Pori Moni filed a case at Savar Police Station against Nasir and another person, accusing them of attempted rape and attempted murder. The case is currently under trial at Dhaka’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal No 9.
